Henri_duc_de_Guise425 years ago, on the 23rd of December 1588 – Henry I, Duke of Guise (Henri Ier de Lorraine, 3e duc de Guise) also called „Balafré” (“Scarface”) was assassinated (by order of King Henry III of Valois and in his own bedroom) in the Blios’ Castle (Château de Blois); a descendant of Louis XII on the maternal side of the family, a Prince of Joinville, Count of Eu, a Grand Master and a Par of France, from 1563 the head of the House of Guise, from 1584 leader of the Catholic League (Holy League) during the eighth religious war in France. His younger brother (born in 1555), archbishop of Reims and a primate of the Belgic Gaul, Louis II, Cardinal of Guise (Louis II de Lorraine, cardinal de Guise) and a Par of France was murdered the following day; bodies of both princes ‘were burnt and their ashes cast in the Loire; a consequence of this crime was the excommunication of the king by Pope Sixtus V.
