Marco Pallis
25 years ago on June 5th 1989, Marco Alexander Pallis died in Liverpool at the age of 93, an explorer, a mountaineer, scholar of religious traditions, a translator, an essayist, and a composer; raised by Orthodox parents (wealthy Greek emigrants to Great Britain), whilst studying (entomology) he leaned towards Roman Catholicism, but eventually became a representative of the "traditionalist school" (perennialist) and a regular contributor to the Studies in Comparative Religion, accepting the thesis of F. Schuon of "transcendent unity of religions"; as a long-time explorer of Tibet he became an expert in Tibetan Buddhism; after the annexation of Tibet by the Communist he has also been championing the independence of the country in the international arena.
