William Ralph Inge
60 years ago, on February 26th 1954 William Ralph Inge died in Oxford (Oxfordshire) at the age of 93, an Anglican priest and philosopher, since 1907 a professor of theology at Jesus College (Cambridge), from 1911 until his death – the dean of the Cathedral of St.Paul in London; a chairman of the Aristotelian Society (1920-1921) and a member of the British Academy, Knight Commander of the Victorian Order (CVO), continuing the seventeenth-century Platonist school of Cambridge and the top expert of Plotinus and neo-Platonism in his era who adapted it to Christian mysticism; due to emphasizing the autonomy of the individual religious experience reluctant attitude to authority and the Church of Rome; a cultural conservative, whiose strong pessimism gained him the nickname the Gloomy Dean.
