Walery Sławek
75 years ago, on April 3rd 1939, Lt.Col. Walery Sławek (coa Prus), alias Gustaw died (as a result of an attempt of taking his own life) in Warsaw at the age of 59, an activist for independence, soldier and a politician; the closest associate and friend of Józef Piłsudski, a youth activist in PPS (Polish Socialist Party) and its Military wing, since 1906 an organiser of the Union of Armed Struggle (Związek Walki Czynnej), a soldier of the First Brigade of the Polish Legions and an organiser of POW (Polish Military Organisation), after 1926 the head of the informal "group of colonels" and an implementer of a policy of agreement between the ruling government with the conservatives and monarchists (conference in Dzików) in 1934 he also tried to reach an agreement with R. Dmowski, a founder (1928) and president of the Nonpartisan Bloc for Cooperation with the Government (BBWR); he proposed an elitist concept of the Legion of Merit and the "New Knighthood " for the Senate, thrice a Prime Minister of Poland ( III- VIII in 1930, December 1930 – V 1931 III- X 1935) and a Speaker of the Sejm (lower house of Parliament) (VI – XI of 1938), according to Pilsudski’s testament he was to become the president of Poland after the implementation of the April Constitution, which was prevented by the "Castle" camarilla.
