Nathaniel Hawthorne
150 years ago, May 19th 1864, at the age of 59 Nathaniel Hawthorne died in Plymouth (New Hampshire), a novelist and a columnist; for some time (from 1841) he lived with his wife in Brook Farm – a commune of Fourier transcendentalists; the 1853-1860 period he spent in Europe, first as an American consul in Liverpool, and then as a private person in Rome and Florence; a representative of Dark Romanticism, science fiction , horror and "gothic novel", but also a master of psychological analysis; his work focuses on the problem of original sin, guilt and redemption; classified (by R. Kirk ) in the New England’s tradition of "puritanical conservatism”, but with ambivalent attitude towards Puritan morality and a desire to expiate the excesses of the Puritan "theocracy", such as Salem “witch” trails.
