Alexander Nevsky
750 years ago, on the 14th of November 1263 in Gorodets near Nizhny Novgorod at the age of 43 Alexander Nevsky from the Rurik dynasty had died, from 1236 a Prince of Novgorod, from 1249- a titular Prince of Kiev and from 1252 – Grand Prince of Vladimir; he enjoyed great victories: against the Swedes in the battle of Neva (1240) and Livonian Branch of the Teutonic Knights in the Battle of the Ice (it took place on a frozen Lake Peipus) in 1242, also freeing the city of Pskov; not long before his death he took monastic vows and took on a name of Alexis; canonised in 1547 by the Russian Orthodox Church; he took first place (over half a million votes out of fifty) in a” The Name of Russia” contest for the greatest figure in Russian history which took place in December 2008.
