80 years ago , on February 27th 1934, Fr . Umberto Benigni had died in Rome at the age of 71, a Catholic priest and historian of the Church, since 1893 an editor of the "L' Eco d'Italia" newspaper, and from 1901 – "La Voce della Verità" in 1902 began working in the Roman Curia, while at the same time since 1906 the undersecretary of the Congregation for the Extraordinary and titular prelate of the House of His Holiness and a close associate of the tecretary of state – Cardinal Raphael Merry del Val, in 1907 he initiated the issuance of the " La Corrispondenza di Roma " daily newsletter (since 1909 in French titled "La Correspondance de Rome", and in 1913-1914 "Cahiers de Rome"), in parallel, in 1909 organised (canonicaly non- formal in status , but at the command and with the support of Pope St. Pius X)" integral” 'association of Mon . Sodalitium Pianum – also known colloquially as "La Sapinière" [„Las fir”] – the aim of which was to combat covert or overt modernism within the Church, according to the findings of the encyclical "Pascendi gregis", based on a network of churchs' collaborators and informants throughout Europe, supported also by the Consistorial Congregation and its prefect, Cardinal Gaetano De Lai, but disbanded by Pope Benedict XV in 1921 due to "change of circumstances"; "sapinière" and its creator became the "black legend" of the modernists, as the "secret Church police" from the "Stalinist era of the Vatican".
