Dymitr Doński625 years ago on May 19th 1389, at the age of 48 prince Dmitry Donskoy (Russian: Дмитрий Донской) of the Rurik dynasty died in Moscow at the age of 48 , prince Dmitry Donskoy (Russian: Дмитрий Донской ) of the Rurik dynasty, from 1359 the Grand Duke of Moscow and since 1362 the Grand Duke of Vladimir; the first Ruthenian ruler since the Mongolian invasion who began to mint his own coin with his image and name; although he never managed to throw off the formal dependence (jarlig) from the Golden Horde, he has repeatedly ceased to pay tribute, and effectively countered the enthronements of other Ruthenian rulers of Tartar origin, and in 1380 dealt a heavy defeat in the Battle of Kulikovo on the Don river (to which he owes his nickname) to Khan Mamai, an event considered to be the beginning of the twilight of the power of the Golden Horde; in 1373 he also fended off, at the Battle of Lyubutsk, an (third) invasion of Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas. Canonised by the Moscow Orthodox Church; in 2002 President Putin has set to his (and Sergius of Radonezh) honour the Order of Service to the Fatherland.
