Albert I80 years ago on February 17th 1934 at the age of 58 – Albert I Cobourg ( Albert Clément Marie Meinrad Leopold of Saxe-Coburg ) was killed falling off from the top of a 32 -meter-high Grand Bon Dieu cliff in the Ardennes , near mèches -les- Dames, a King – Soldier ( Roi Soldat ) and a King – Knight ( Roi Chevalier ), the younger son of Philip Coburg count of Flanders , a nephew of King Leopold II , since 1905 the Belgian heir to the throne , from December 17th 1909 the third King of the Belgians ( Roi des Belges ) ; a heroic ruler of the nation attacked (despite the neutrality of Belgium ) by the Germans during World War I , the last monarch in the history of Europe , who personally commanded on the battlefield , living in the trenches and flying an aeroplane over enemy lines , nevertheless saving soldier's lives by not allowing to use of the Belgian army to the great offensive at Verdun and the Somme , which were both great slaughters.
