Kromer425 years ago, on March 23rd 1589 at the age of 76 Martin Kromer had died in Lidzbark ,a Catholic priest, diplomat, humanist,a historian and theorist of music,one of the promoters of the Counter-Reformation in Poland, a son of a burgher and a noblewoman (ennobled in 1552 by Sigismund Augustus for his works on the subject of Polish history), after graduating (1530) from the Cracow Academy with a Bachelor 's degree, he continued his studies in Padua and Bologna where he earned his doctorate in both laws, ordained as a priest after his return to Poland (1542) he worked as a secretary to the Bishop of Cracow Peter Gamrat, and from 1545 to the king Sigismund Augustus; in the years 1558 to 1564 he was an envoy to the Imperial court; as an expert in Prussian matters he was appointed coadjutor of the diocese of Warmia in 1570 and in 1579 (after the death of Cardinal Hosius) a bishop of Warmia, and by this also a Sambian prince at the same time.
