Yeats75 years ago , on January 28th , William Butler Yeats aged 73 died in Menton ( Provence , France ), a poet, playwright , a novelist and an Irish essayist ( writing in English) , next to Eliot and Pound the greatest English-speaking poet of the twentieth century (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923 ) , symbolist and neo-romantic , reviver of Celtic mythology , a representative of the Irish literary Revival and a co-founder of the Abbey Theatre , between 1922 and 1925 a senator of the Irish Free State , officially a Protestant but an adept of theosophy , an esoteric and an occultist , a member of Secret Society of the Golden Dawn ( Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn ) , also under the influence of Buddhism and the Upanishads , an Irish nationalist who rejected revolutionary methods, an aristocratic elitist despising democracy, supporter of Mussolini and the (near the end of his life ) Blue shirts of General Eoin O'Duffy.
