Alexander_Newski750 years ago, on the 14th of November 1263 in Gorodets near Nizhny Novgorod at the age of 43 Alexander Nevsky from the Rurik dynasty had died, from 1236 a Prince of Novgorod, from 1249- a titular Prince of Kiev and from 1252 – Grand Prince of Vladimir; he enjoyed great victories: against the Swedes in the battle of Neva (1240) and Livonian Branch of the Teutonic Knights in the Battle of the Ice (it took place on a frozen Lake Peipus) in 1242, also freeing the city of Pskov; not long before his death he took monastic vows and took on a name of Alexis; canonised in 1547 by the Russian Orthodox Church; he took first place (over half a million votes out of fifty) in a” The Name of Russia” contest for the greatest figure in Russian history which took place in December 2008.
